Ferrari claimed a 1-2 finish at Hockenheimring after a controversial race
Another discussion started in the Formula 1 world after the German Grand Prix at Hockenheimring last Sunday. McLaren and Red Bull were not the main characters this time after a Grand Prix without a winner from either of both teams. Ferrari returned to the top by claiming their second 1-2 finish of the season. All of the attention surrounds a mid-race pass which involved Felipe Massa allowing Fernando Alonso through for the race victory. Instead of jubilation, there was a subdued handshake between the two Ferrari drivers as the results of the race were influenced by team orders, which are banned in Formula 1.

It became another race where Red Bull was unable to turn its Pole Position into a race victory. Sebastian Vettel started at front row of the grid ahead of Alonso and Massa. After Turn 1 it was Massa who took the lead. Behind them, World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren rose to fourth place by first passing team-mate Jenson Button and then overhauling Red Bull’s “second driver” Mark Webber on the inside of Turn 6 hairpin.

After being overtaken by Hamilton, Webber now came under pressure from the McLaren of reigning World Champion Jenson Button on the first lap. The order at the front remained the same until Lap 22, with Massa leading Alonso, Vettel and Webber. Champion Jenson Button attacked the struggling Red Bull of Mark Webber for fifth; the Australian managed to finish sixth despite of being advised by his team to break ‘hard and late’ due to oil consumption levels which were too high.

At the front, Massa continued to lead although Alonso slowly began to reduce the advantage from three seconds to finally just eight tenths before the Brazilian received the following radio message from Race Engineer Rob Smedley: “Fernando is faster than you; can you confirm that message?”  Massa reacted by letting Alonso pass him on the exit of turn six with only 18 laps remaining. Smedley was again on the radio apologizing to Massa. “Good lad - just stick with it now, sorry” he said.

Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull-Renault) was third, just five seconds behind Massa, but the Red Bulls had never been a threat to the Ferraris. Reigning World Champion Jenson Button (McLaren-Mercedes) and teammate Lewis Hamilton were fourth and fifth, half a minute off the pace, followed by the second Red Bull driver Mark Webber winner of the British GP.

Hamilton retains his lead in the divers' Formula 1 World Championship with 157 points ahead of teammate Button on 143. Webber and Vettel are tied on 136 points in third place. McLaren also continues to lead the manufacturers' Championship with 300 points ahead of Red Bull (272) and Ferrari (208).
